NYT encourages ‘fair-minded voters’ in Kalamazoo to support Ordinance 1856

By David Alire Garcia | 11.02.09 | 11:12 am

If any of the undecided voters in Kalamazoo are New York Times subscribers, then supporters of the anti-discrimination ordinance on the ballot tomorrow just got a nice boost.

In a Monday editorial, the NYT editorial board offered its strong support for the handful of gay-rights initiatives on the ballot around the country on Tuesday. Most of those initiatives have to do with civil marriage rights or the legality of domestic partnership arrangements. But in Kalamazoo, proposed Ordinance 1856 and its inclusion of civil rights protections for gay and transgender people is the big LGBT ballot initiative.

From the NYT:

A third initiative, in Kalamazoo, has the potential to overturn a measure unanimously approved by the City Commission barring discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in housing, employment and public accommodations. Fair-minded voters should respond by voting yes to uphold the antidiscrimination law.
