As state revenues continue to decline, and along with it funding for state universities, Michigan State University is considering a proposal to cut dozens of academic program and two entire departments. They have a website up about the proposal and a PDF file of the specific recommendations being considered.
The proposal includes:
* Eliminating the Geological Sciences Department in the College of Natural Science
* Eliminating 7 departments within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
* Eliminating doctoral programs in the College of Education for curriculum, instruction, teacher education and K-12 administration.
* Eliminating 13 master’s degree programs throughout various colleges, including degrees in educational counseling, interior design, computational chemistry, clinical psychology and family counseling.
* Eliminating 16 undergraduate degree programs, including degrees in environmental soil science, earth science, statistics, plant pathology and classical studies.
Some of these cuts seem like a very bad idea in a state that relies upon its unique geological history (and the tourism it creates) and its agriculture for much of its economic base.
