MSU proposes major program cuts due to budget problems

By Ed Brayton | 11.02.09 | 7:02 am

As state revenues continue to decline, and along with it funding for state universities, Michigan State University is considering a proposal to cut dozens of academic program and two entire departments. They have a website up about the proposal and a PDF file of the specific recommendations being considered.

The proposal includes:

* Eliminating the Geological Sciences Department in the College of Natural Science

* Eliminating 7 departments within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources

* Eliminating doctoral programs in the College of Education for curriculum, instruction, teacher education and K-12 administration.

* Eliminating 13 master’s degree programs throughout various colleges, including degrees in educational counseling, interior design, computational chemistry, clinical psychology and family counseling.

* Eliminating 16 undergraduate degree programs, including degrees in environmental soil science, earth science, statistics, plant pathology and classical studies.

Some of these cuts seem like a very bad idea in a state that relies upon its unique geological history (and the tourism it creates) and its agriculture for much of its economic base.

A correction about the eliminations in the College of Education. It would not be doctoral programs. It would be Educational Specialist programs (Ed.S.). These programs are for practicing educators (teachers, principals, etc.).
    The linked PDF says:
“Educational specialist degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Teacher Education
Educational specialist degree in K-12 Educational Administration”

No doctoral programs (Ph.D.) are being proposed for elimination in the College of Education.

Why is MSU so quick to eliminate programs when they have alternatives that they have not looked intoto save these programs? U of M is a state University, I wonder if they are cutting flagship programs and axing other programs that their Provost doesnt see value in. This is a bunch of crap and it's time the students and alumni of MSU start demanding changes in leadership.
