Jackson area state rep. announces he has rare blood disorder

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.28.09 | 5:41 pm

State Rep. Mike Simpson announced Wednesday he is suffering from a rare blood disorder.

The disorder, called light-chain deposition, was diagnosed in the Democratic lawmaker from Jackson after he suffered “a variety of symptoms.” The disease can impact the heart, liver and kidneys.

In a statement released late Wednesday, Simpson had this to say:

“There have been some expressions of concern about my health recently and I wanted to take this opportunity to let my colleagues, friends and the people I represent know what is going on. For the past few months, I have suffered from a variety of symptoms but wanted to wait until the budget process was complete before undergoing three weeks of extensive testing. I have been diagnosed with light-chain deposition, a rare blood disorder that my doctors tell me will take extensive therapy to treat. I greatly appreciate their hard work and dedication during this difficult time for me and my family. I am also very grateful for the support I’ve received from the members of the community who have expressed their sympathy. Your kindness has touched me deeply.”

Simpson says he will continue to work while receiving treatment.
