It has not been a banner week for two governments in Macomb County. Warren officials were notified they are being sued for an incident in which a diabetic man was tasered by Warren police officers. In the meantime, the county itself is being sued for eliminating a Christmas display which depicted the birth of Jesus.
In the Warren lawsuit, 53-year-old Ralph Edward Eldridge accuses police of assault, battery, excessive force, false arrest, gross negligence and intentional infliction of emotional and physical distress. Eldridge alleges in his suit that officers tasered him after he informed them he was suffering a diabetic reaction and needed candy to stabilize his blood sugar.
But according to the Macomb Daily, police tell a very different story. A police report obtained by the newspaper shows officers had to taser Eldridge after he refused to exit his vehicle.
Meanwhile, the county’s road commission is being sued by a Christian group over its refusal to allow John Satawa to put up a nativity scene in the public right of way on road in Warren. The Satawa family had been doing so since 1945, but the Freedom From Religion Foundation objected to the display.
According the MLive, the Wisconsin group wrote a letter to the commission, in which it said
“Once the government enters into the religion business, conferring endorsement and preference for one religion over others, it strikes a blow at religious liberty, forcing taxpayers of all faiths and of no religion to support a particular expression of worship.”
The Thomas More Law Center is representing Satawa in the suit filed in federal court.
