ACLU to hold special screenings of ‘Rendition’

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.18.07 | 6:44 pm

DETROIT– The American Civil Liberties Union will host three screenings of the new film ‘Rendition’ starting Oct. 23. The screenings will occur in three Michigan cities, Canton, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo.

The film features Reese Witherspoon, Jake Gyllenhal, and Meryl Streep.

Extraordinary rendition is the illegal practice of abducting foreign nationals for detention and interrogation in secret overseas prisons. Recent accounts of rendition have demonstrated a chilling pattern – black-clad masked men grab foreign nationals, beat and strip them down before loading them onto planes for destinations unknown to their families or governments. These victims are then taken to secret “black site” prisons around the world. Others are delivered to nations like Egypt, Algeria, Syria, and Morocco that are notorious for torturing prisoners.

Prior to each showing, the ACLU of Michigan will host a discussion about the Don’t Wait for ’08 100-day campaign to end torture, restore habeas corpus, stop warrantless wiretapping and close Guantanamo Bay.
