CMU student at center of GOP underage drinking story sends apology to Snyder campaign

By Todd A. Heywood | 10.13.09 | 7:22 am

Central Michigan University student Vanessa Oblinger, whose blog on underage drinking at the Republican Policy Conference last month, has sent a letter of apology to Ann Arbor business man and GOP candidate for governor apologizing for the furor over her blog post.

Sources in the Snyder campaign confirm the letter is authentic and has been received by the campaign. It began appearing on the Internet Oct. 10.

The full letter follows:

Date: Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Subject: Dear Rick Snyder

Dear Mr. Snyder,

It was with great regret when I read the Detroit News story this morning that implied your campaign had anything to do with my blog posting. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. The fact is, when I tried to attend your gathering on Saturday night, I was turned away at the door because I was not 21. Even more so, the only gubernatorial parties I attended were ones hosted by Attorney General Mike Cox and Sheriff Mike Bouchard. While I am not willing to discuss this with the media, I do think it is important that the record is set straight on this matter.

Sincerely,

Vanessa Oblinger

Oblinger’s original Sept. 28 post caused a stir and lead Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer to call for an investigation. Several news outlets, including WLNS the CBS affiliate in Lansing, have since reported the Liquor Control Commission has begun to investigate allegations of underage drinking at various political events on the island Sept. 25 and 26.

The letter was not authentic and a retraction and correction will be issued shortly.

The apology from this college student shows a person who is apologizing like a soon to be adult. The matter of the underage drinking will be investigated by a panel of Democrats appointed by Democrats, namely the MLCC.

How about some apologies from the chronological adults like the leader of the Michigan Democratic Party who impuned and implaced all the candidates except the two top law enforcement candidates in Michigan who are running for Gov.

“The fact is, when I tried to attend your gathering on Saturday night, I was turned away at the door because I was not 21. Even more so, the only gubernatorial parties I attended were ones hosted by Attorney General Mike Cox and Sheriff Mike Bouchard.”

What say you adult leaders of Michigan..where is your apology to Rick Snyder. Be a man an apologize.

      Centrist1:

The apology was written by a member of the Rick Snyder campaign. Ms. Oblinger forwarded the statement without giving it any thought. She has now retracted part of her statement, which was a political ploy that exploited her for their own benefit. Her real words in an exclusive interview can be found here:

This is the type of student enrolled at CMU?

“My intentions were not bad,” Oblinger said. “The blog was a stupid thing that I just wrote for class…the only party I recall being at was the Cox one…it was prepared by someone else…I didn’t really read over it… it was while I was distracted.”

Come on! Ms. Oblinger's word is worth nothing; her 15 minutes of fame are over.
