Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick continues to lose appeals in court over his conviction and restitution. Kilpatrick has been trying to get his restitution payments of $6,000 a month reduced by as much as 90 percent, but a state court on Wednesday ordered him to turn over more complete financial documents that he is seeking to withhold. The Detroit News reports:
The presiding judge of the Wayne County Circuit Court’s criminal division denied former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s appeal today to disqualify a judge and his orders that the ex-mayor must give more of his financial records to prosecutors.
Judge Edward Ewell Jr.’s action today allows Wayne Circuit Judge David Groner’s Tuesday rulings to stand, including Groner’s refusal to disqualify himself from the case.
Groner on Tuesday ordered Kilpatrick to produce a long list of financial documents by Oct. 16, prior to an Oct. 29 hearing when the former mayor must answer questions about The required documents include all statements and checks written from accounts related to campaign funds, political action committees, charitable trusts and accounts controlled by Kilpatrick, his wife, Carlita, or other third parties on Kilpatrick’s behalf.
Groner also ordered Kilpatrick to turn over household bills, tax returns and a copy of the lease for the $1 million home where he lives in a Dallas suburb.
Kilpatrick’s attorney says he’s considering appealing the decision to a higher court, which would be the Michigan Court of Appeals.
