In response to serious budget problems, the Michigan Department of Agriculture announced on Wednesday that they are permanently closing all of their regional offices around the state as well as the district office in Marquette. The offices being closed down are located in Detroit, Escanaba, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Saginaw, St. Joseph, and Traverse City.
In a press release, the MDA said this move was intended to save about $600,000 a year. MDA Director Don Koivisto said:
“MDA’s regional offices are an important part of the department’s ability to deliver its programs to our customers; however, budget realities are causing us to look at different ways of doing business. While we anticipate there will be some bumps in the road as we transition to this new business model, MDA will work hard to maintain the high level of customer service we have always provided.”
Those regional offices perform a variety of tasks: emergency incident management; response to outbreaks of foodborne illness; investigations; and administering pesticide applicator exams. All calls to those regional offices are now automatically rerouted to the main office in Lansing.
