LANSING — East Lansing Democrat Gretchen Whitmer has filed the paperwork necessary to become an official candidate for the Democratic nomination for attorney general on the 2010 ticket.
Whitmer, who has served in both the House and the Senate, has long been rumored as a likely candidate.
The 38-year-old divorced mother of two said she is still in the process of developing her platform, reports the Lansing State Journal.
“In the weeks and months ahead, I’m going to continue to have serious conversations with police, prosecutors and families about how to better protect and serve the public through the office of attorney general,” Whitmer said.
That is not stopping the Michigan Republican Party from attacking Whitmer.
Michigan Republicans already are taking potshots at Whitmer. Greg McNeilly, spokesman for the state Republican Party, said Whitmer is a “liberal elitist” and “another Jennifer Granholm clone seeking fame and glory over the best interests of residents.” Granholm served as attorney general before winning election as governor in 2002.
On the Republican side, Sen. Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester is a candidate.
