House passes two budget bills, adjourns for the night

By Ed Brayton | 10.01.09 | 2:03 am

The Michigan House continued to work past the midnight deadline for a government shutdown, passing two budget bills before adjourning until noon on Thursday.

At 12:56 a.m., they took up HB 245, the general government operations bill that includes steep cuts in revenue sharing for cities and municipalities, for the second time. The first time they took up the bill, the leadership pulled the vote after it was clear that the legislation was going to be defeated. This time it passed by a narrow 56-52 margin.

At 1:20 a.m., they took up HB 253, the state police budget. This bill includes few significant cuts, but does include funding for the controversial new Michigan State Police headquarters. The bill passed 64-44.

The House then adjourned at 1:28 AM and will be back in session at noon on Thursday.
