No budget, no Capitol cops

By Ed Brayton | 09.30.09 | 4:03 pm

A well-placed source in the legislature tells Michigan Messenger that part of urgency to pass the budget is due to the fact that in case of a government shutdown, the Michigan State Police post in the Michigan State Capitol will be closed and there will be no on-scene protection for the legislators or observers in the building.

This is apparently true because, as part of a ploy to protect the state police budget, a provision was put into a budget bill to close down that post. If a new budget is not passed by midnight tonight, that post is no longer considered an essential state service and will be closed.

Lansing city police and the state police would still respond to calls in case of an incident, but they will not be on the scene to patrol. The source expressed concern not so much for the safety of the facilities, but for emergency medical situations because those officers tend to be the first responders in case of such an incident.
