House passes DHS budget

By Ed Brayton | 09.29.09 | 10:54 pm

The state House of Representatives easily passed the conference committee budget for the Department of Human Services shortly before 10:30 on Tuesday night. The vote was 69-39. That budget includes $55 million worth of cuts in grants for day care services, employment training programs, before and after school programs and the Strong Families/Safe Children program.

It also includes $15 million in cuts to state juvenile justice programs, including shutting down all of the state’s community juvenile justice centers.

Cutting services to children to balance the budget- rather than impose a luxury tax or some other measure- the legislators can be proud!

Privatizing all adoptions is a particularly stupid move. Private agencies are struggling to handle 70% of DHS referrals, with constant staff turnover. Now the fate of 100% of children available for adoption will be in the hands of a few inexperienced, underpaid private agency workers. What a shame.
