Conflicting reports on Gitmo detainees to Standish plan

By Ed Brayton | 09.29.09 | 6:52 am

The past 24 hours has brought a rash of conflicting reports on whether a proposal to move detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to a maximum security prison in Standish, Michigan is still under consideration. Yesterday afternoon, Fox News reported from unnamed sources that the Standish prison was no longer under consideration as a place to house those inmates.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra then seemed to confirm that, saying he’s “95 percent certain” that Standish was “off the table” based on his discussions with Defense Department officials.

The White House only said that many options were still being considered, but later in the day Rep. Bart Stupak told the Detroit News that Standish “is still one of the locations being considered.” Standish City Manager Mike Moran also believes that the option is still being considered:

“It’s not true,” Moran said of reports Standish is no longer an option. “Standish is still being considered. Whatever rumor and whatever you’re hearing, I have received no factual information that that’s the case.”

Only time will tell who is right, of course.
