The maximum security prison facility in Standish is no longer under consideration by the Obama administration as a relocation site for prisoners currently being held at Guantanamo Bay.
Fox News reports the administration is close to making a final decision.
The administration officials did not disclose what the final possible locations were, but one did say a soon-to-be closed maximum-security prison in Standish, Mich., and a military prison in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., were not being considered.
The official said other options could be U.S. military brigs and the SuperMax prison in Colorado.
Relocating the prisoners to Standish has been a controversial debate, with the state holding hearings about the proposal. Many residents in Standish want the prison to stay open because it is the economic life blood of the region.
As part of a larger package of budget cuts, Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered the facility closed, as well as a facility in Muskegon and five prison camps. There was talk of leasing the Standish prison to California officials, but that proposal died because California did not have he money to pay for moving the prisoners to Michigan.
