Snyder wins state Republican straw poll

By Ed Brayton | 09.28.09 | 7:13 am

In a straw poll of Republican activists at the annual Mackinac Island conference, venture capitalist Rick Snyder scored an upset victory over candidates with much higher name recognition. Snyder received a commanding 31 percent of the votes, while Attorney General Mike Cox got 24.1 percent and Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard got 24 percent. Rep. Pete Hoekstra was at 17.6% and State Sen. Tom George came in last place at 3.3%.

These figures should be taken with a rather large hunk of salt. These are Republican activists, not rank and file voters. In polls of voters around the state, Snyder is running well behind Cox and Hoekstra. Snyder does not have nearly the name recognition of the other candidates because he has not served in public office.

The poll also found Judge Bill Schuette getting much greater support to be the next attorney general over Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop. Schuette got support from 57.5 percent of the activists at Mackinac; Bishop received 36.8 percent.
