LANSING — As the deadline to pass a balanced budget is looming large on the horizon, the Michigan House on Saturday announced the cancellation of it’s planned 2 p.m. session on Sunday. The Democratic-run House will meet again next on Tuesday, after taking Monday off for the Yom Kippur holiday.
Lawmakers have until Wednesday at 11:59 p.m to find a way to cover an estimated $2.7 billion deficit, or the state will shut down operations at 12 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1. The State Constitution requires lawmakers to pass a balanced budget.
A short while later, the Senate also canceled its 3 p.m. session scheduled for Sunday.
Many Republicans, who control the Senate, remain on Mackinac Island for the state GOP policy conference. The Senate recessed Friday at noon and many Republicans left the Capitol and headed for the island, a move Democrats in the Senate, and Gov. Jennifer Granholm attacked.
Also on Sunday, “Tea Party” protesters are expected to rally at the Capitol to protest any tax or fee increases to balance the budget.
