Stabenow: Kyl’s mom probably needed maternity care

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.25.09 | 1:59 pm

Michigan’s junior U.S. senator, Debbie Stabenow, had a minor back and forth Friday morning with a colleague from Arizona, Republican John Kyl, during a Senate Finance Committee hearing about proposed health care reform legislation.

The topic of discussion was whether to include maternity care in all insurance policies. Kyl wanted to strike a provision which would provide the coverage, Stabenow, a Democrat from Lansing, wanted to keep it, reports Talking Points Memo.

And thus the ground work was laid for the following exchange:

“I don’t need maternity care,” Kyl said. “So requiring that on my insurance policy is something that I don’t need and will make the policy more expensive.”

Stabenow interrupted: “I think your mom probably did.”

The Kyl amendment went down on a 9-to-14 vote.

Here’s the video of the exchange.

I just don't get people like John Kyl, people who have achieved status and wealth thanks to the privilege of living in this country and still maintain the “I've got mine, the hell with you” attitude. But boy, we sure know how to grow 'em in America.
