Walberg to host controversial ‘You Lie’ congressman for fundraiser

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.24.09 | 5:11 pm

Former U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, a Republican ousted by Democrat Mark Schauer last November, will host a fundraiser Oct. 2 featuring U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, the controversial South Carolina Republican who has been criticized for yelling at President Obama during his recent health care reform address to a joint session of Congress.

Walberg will charge $20 a ticket to hear Wilson speak at the event in Jackson. For $150, participants will be able to get their picture taken with the congressman.

Sarah Blaney, a spokeswoman for the Schauer’s re-election campaign, issued the following statement about the planned fundraiser:

Screaming at the President of the United States on the House floor, then using the outburst to raise campaign funds, says everything you need to know about Joe Wilson and Tim Walberg. By embracing his former colleague, Tim Walberg has made it clear that he embraces what is wrong with Washington, and is not serious about fixing our broken health care system. If you are the company you keep, then Tim Walberg stands with Joe Wilson and the obstructionists.

Walberg has announced he will challenge Schauer in 2010 in an attempt to reclaim his former congressional seat, which spans much of southern Lower Peninsula between the outskirts of Ann Arbor and Lansing to Battle Creek.
