Cuts to prisons leads to inmate protest in U.P. prison

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.21.09 | 11:33 am

Prisoners in the Upper Peninsula’s Chippewa Correctional Facility are not happy with state budget cuts. And to make their displeasure known to the state, about 100 prisoners staged a protest Saturday night.

The prisoners remained in the outside yard for about 30 minutes longer than they were supposed to, reports Lansing’s WLNS. The prisoners were protesting staffing cut backs which in turn have cut back on the time they get to spend outside.

As a result of the protests, one prisoner was charged with inciting a riot, and the prison has had to call in more staff.
