After the August primary results put mayor Dave Bing more than 70 percent ahead of his opponent Tom Barrow it seemed safe to assume that Bing was a shoe in for the city’s top spot in the Nov. 3 general election.
But according to a report on the Michigan Citizen website, Barrow is no longer the underdog. Bing’s battles with unions to cut wages and layoff city workers have pitted powerful unions against him in the upcoming election, the article suggests.
The article also suggests that voters in the 14th Congressional District may turn support to Barrow after Bing was “loudly booed” at a Democratic 14th district meeting earlier this month. U.S. Rep. John Conyers, who represents the 14th district, endorsed Cockrel in the special election but so far he has not endorsed any candidate for the general election.
But the importance of union support may be overrated. Because many union members don’t live in the city of Detroit, union support is not crucial in winning a Detroit election. More unions backed Kenneth Cockrel Jr. in the May 5 special election but Bing won, allowing him to serve the rest of Ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s term and run as an incumbent in the upcoming general election.
