Freshman GOP Rep. considering bid for Secretary of State

By Todd A. Heywood | 09.21.09 | 11:33 am

The field of potential Republican nominees for Secretary of State might be one person larger.

Right now four Republicans are vying for the honor of replacing term-limited incumbent Terri Lynn Land, who is trying to snatch up the GOP nomination for Lt. Gov. with Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard. Among the current list of potential Secretary of State candidates are Sen. Cameron Brown, Sen Michelle McManus, Anne Norlander and Joanna Emmons. But that list of four is not good enough for some movers and shakers in the GOP — so enter Rep. Paul Scott a first term Republican from Flint.

Tim Skubick reports on his blog that Scott is weighing the run.

Last week an e-mail from the 5th District Republicans chair Lutullus Penton, Jr. made the rounds. That e-mail served as the first notice that folks were trying to recruit Scott to run.

Among the several reasons Penton and his co-signers cited to support Scott were his pro-life bone fides. The e-mail clarifies them as follows:

He has the values as a pro-life leader who sponsored legislation to create a pro-life license plate and is in the process of writing a bill that defines life as beginning at the moment of conception.

The letter also cites Penton’s degrees from the University of Michigan and Harvard, his business experience, and his minority status:

He has the diversity that our party lacks and so badly needs in 2010. We will not be successful without attracting minority votes and we must show that we are serious about promoting our culturally diverse rising stars in our party.

The e-mailed letter was signed by District Chairman, Lutullus S. Penton Jr., Bill Voorheis (2004 Bush/Cheney Michigan Social Values Chair), Michelle Voorheis (Former 5th district chair), and Lanny Valentine. The Voorheis family are extremely active social conservatives in the party.
