Detroit possible site for wind turbine plant

By Ed Brayton | 09.14.09 | 7:05 am

Because of its proximity to water, highway and rail transportation, a neighborhood in Detroit is one of several possible sites for a $45 million wind turbine facility if questions of state and federal funding can be worked out. MLive reports:

Southwest Detroit’s Delray neighborhood could soon be home to a wind turbine energy plant.

NextEnergy, an alternative energy producer, is seeking to build a a $45 million site in Detroit, and Delray’s proximity to the Detroit River, the Ambassador Bridge, railways and highways puts it high on the list of the seven sites the company is considering.

The proposed facility would be used to test wind turbine powertrains, and it needs to be in a location where manufacturers can easily transport the equipment needed to test such machines.

The company has applied for a federal grant to help cover the cost of the facility and will be asking for state help as well.
