Cash for clunkers repayments near 50 percent

More than two weeks after the end of the cash for clunkers program, the Department of Transportation says it has finally managed to get more than one third of the vouchers processed and the reimbursements sent to the dealerships that submitted them. Automotive News reports:

The Transportation Department has repaid dealers for more than a third of the vouchers they gave consumers under the cash-for-clunkers program, a federal spokeswoman said today.

As of this morning, the government has paid dealers $1.22 billion for 289,000 vouchers, said Jill Zuckman, spokeswoman for Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

That’s 42.4 percent of the $2.88 billion applied for by dealers under the program, which accepted rebate submissions from July 27 to Aug. 25.

The DOT doubled the number of people they had processing the voucher submissions after the program ended and say that they still intend to meet a September 30 deadline to have all the reimbursement payments in the hands of dealers.
