Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, said on Thursday that Congress will get to work on passing an extension of unemployment benefits now that the August recess is over and lawmakers have returned to the nation’s capitol. The Detroit News reports:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today called an extension of jobless benefits “essential,” signaling the House of Representatives will act quickly to keep as many as 100,000 Michiganians from losing their benefits by the end of the year.
“The unemployment insurance is essential. We cannot let that run out,” Pelosi said in her weekly news conference.
“And that is on our agenda to be dealt with.”
The Obama administration has also said they want to pass an unemployment extension and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has also indicated that his chamber would take up the issue soon.
