In an interview on WJR AM 760 Tuesday morning, Michigan Attorney General and 2010 GOP gubernatorial hopeful Mike Cox said he believes that ultimately control of the Detroit Public Schools should rest in the office of the mayor.
“I think ultimately the mayor should run the Detroit Public Schools, because voters need somebody to be able to say to ‘You were given the charge. It was your authority,’” Cox is quoted as saying in a story by MLive.com reporter Jonathan Oosting.
School Boards are elected in the state of Michigan, and the Detroit Public Schools board is no exception.
Cox is throwing his hat behind a proposal Mayor David Bing has floated already.
In addition to throwing his weight behind Bing’s mayoral control of the schools, Cox also announced he would be representing Robert Bobb, the district’s emergency financial manager. Bobb was appointed to oversee the finances of the school by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
The Detroit Public Schools Board is suing Bobb, and in turn Bobb is suing the board. The board argues Bobb overstepped his authority when he made decisions which impacted academics, and Bobb argues the board overstepped its authority when it promoted an interim superintendent to the superintendent.
