State withholds funds from Detroit due to late audit

DETROIT — At a time when Detroit risks running out of cash to pay workers, the city is missing out on the one million dollars in state revenue sharing funds it was slated to get this week because it has not filed an audit for the 2008 fiscal year.

The audit that has been delinquent since last year when former mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was in office, according to an NPR report.

This isn’t the first time Detroit has fallen behind in filing its annual audit. The audit for the 2007 fiscal was filed more than one year past its due date. The state mandates that major cities submit financial audits of budgets in order to anticipate revenue.
