Lawsuits fly between DPS board and Bobb

Over the past few months there has been a growing power struggle between the Detroit Public School Board of Education the district’s emergency financial manager Robert Bobb.

This month the Board sued Bobb for hiring private academic consulting firms to work in the district without notifying board members. Also this month, the board promoted the acting superintendent, Teresa Gueyser, to hold the position permanently, a move Bobb blocked by holding Gueyser’s pay.

Now, Bobb says he plans to sue the Board for hiring Gueyser without conducting a national search to fill the position and without first consulting him, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Bobb was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm in January to control the district’s chaotic finances. According to The Free Press Bobb is suing so the board will repeal its decision to promote Gueyser and cede all future financial decisions to his authority.
