The Detroit Free Press reports on the final numbers from the cash for clunkers program, noting that 690,114 deals were submitted by dealers for a total of $2.877 billion in rebates. Since $100 million of the $3 billion allocated was intentionally reserved for administrative costs, the program came in just slightly under budget. Most of the vehicles traded in were trucks, mini-vans and SUVs; most of the vehicles traded for were relatively fuel-efficient smaller cars and sedans. At some point, perhaps the data will be available to determine how many gallons of gasoline or barrels of oil were saved by the exchange of gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient ones.
