Gov. Jennifer Granholm has thrown her support behind Lt. Gov. John Cherry.
In an email sent out to Cherry’s exploratory committee, A Whole Lot of People Supporting John Cherry, Granholm not only endorses her two-term lieutenant, but asks for money for his as yet unannounced campaign.
I know John cares about the same things you and I do: creating jobs, protecting families, and ensuring that all Michigan’s children receive a quality education. That is why I am asking you to join me in supporting John in his campaign to be Michigan’s next governor with a contribution today. Please help with a contribution of $10, $25, $50 or more.
Over the years, I’ve watched the way John works with people to get things done. From his leadership of the Commission on Higher Education that led to revolutionary changes in our high school curriculum and the $4,000 Michigan Promise scholarship, to his devotion to protecting our Great Lakes, John is the kind of person who always does what’s right for our state’s future. Not only that, but Republicans and Democrats alike recognize his integrity and trustworthiness — exactly what we need more of in politics today.
The only Democrat to formally announce a bid for the Governor’s office is State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, D-Salem. Former state Rep. John Freeman has also thrown his hat in the ring for the nomination.
Former Michigan State University football coach and current MSU Trustee George Perles has toyed with the idea of a big for governor, and House Speaker Andy Dillon is said to be considering a run. While Cherry has not announced formally that he will seek the nod to be Michigan’s next governor when Granholm steps down Jan. 2011 because of term limits, all that is left of such an announcement is a formality.
While Cherry has sewn up many of the endorsements traditional to Democrats in the state, a recent poll suggests he could be ousted by some one else.
