Cash for clunkers program ends; deadline extended to noon Tuesday

By Ed Brayton | 08.25.09 | 7:01 am

The cash for clunkers program officially ended at 8 pm on Monday, but the Department of Transportation extended the deadline for filing completed applications to noon on Tuesday because of a last minute rush to complete deals that brought some technical problems with it. Automotive News reports:

The Transportation Department extended to noon tomorrow the deadline for dealers filing rebate claims under the cash-for-clunkers program amid mounting reports of computer snags.

The deadline for completing customers’ deals remains 8 p.m. EDT tonight, the agency said in an e-mail.

“Despite a large increase in the system’s capacity, the Web site was down temporarily this afternoon,” the statement said. “Because of the temporary shutdown, dealers have been given extra time to file the necessary paperwork.”

The computers stayed down most of Monday afternoon and the National Automobile Dealers Association said that if the system wasn’t back online by 8 pm Monday night they would ask for a further extension in order to make sure that all deals agreed to prior to the deadline would be processed and the dealerships would get reimbursed for them.
