Expenditures of Genesee County water and sewer authority under scrutiny

Customers of the Beecher Metropolitan Water and Sewer District are facing rate increases, but they are not happy that records obtained by the Flint Journal show board members of the District have spent thousands of dollars for travel junkets.

The Flint Journal reports the five member board is under scrutiny, and being met with calls for investigations by Genesee County Prosecutor David Layton and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox by residents of the district.

According to travel records from the District, a public authority, Board members have racked up $150,000 in travel expenses since 2004. Among the costs uncovered by the Journal:

2008
• Trip for four board members to Atlanta, Ga.
Trip highlight: 9-day trip for a 5-day conference, including $335 dinner of Alaskan king crab and filet mignon. Conference registration included two spouses and three other guests
Total cost: $18,141

• Trip for four board members to Kalamazoo
Highlight: $125 to attend a dinner at the Air Zoo, an annual banquet, and wine and chocolate tour
Total cost: $6,670

2009
• Trip for five members to San Diego, Calif.
Highlight: Visit by two members to Sea World, $13,800 on hotels for a 19-day trip to a 4-day conference
Total cost: $36,000

According to the Journal, 30 percent of the residents served by the District live in poverty.
