Several municipalities in the state of Michigan will receive an additional $55 million in funds from the federal government, most of it going to help city and municipal bus systems upgrade to alternative fuel buses and vehicles for their fleet. The Detroit Free Press reports:
Michigan bus and transit systems will share $54.8 million in federal grants, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today.
The biggest recipient is the SMART bus system, which will receive $20.5 million to purchase four alternative-fuel buses, 56 small buses for disabled passengers, an automatic vehicle locator system and communications equipment.
Detroit’s transportation department will receive $18.7 million for maintenance and renovations to facilities.
Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo and Saginaw will also receive funds for the purchase of new, more environmentally friendly vehicles.
