GOP Rep. introduces Constitutional amendment resolution to assure health care choices

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.20.09 | 10:24 am

Republican state Rep. Justin Amash, R-Cascade, wants to amend the state’s Constitution to prevent Michigan residents from being forced to participate in a national health care program. Amash said in a press release:

“Despite claims to the contrary, the congressional proposal will push people into publicly-financed, government-managed insurance systems that will result in substantially higher overall costs or rationing. Government programs are notoriously inefficient and bureaucrats do not have the incentives or qualifications to manage complex health care decisions.”

The measure assures the right of citizens, employers and insurance companies to enter into private contracts for health care, and would nullify any federal mandates.

The resolution must pass the both chambers of the legislature with a two thirds approval to be placed on the 2010 ballot.
