State looks at legislation to force people to pay parking tickets

A state House Committee will consider legislation Thursday which will prevent people with three or more unpaid parking tickets from renewing their driver’s license.

According to a story in the Lansing State Journal, Grand Rapids Democrat Roy Schmidt introduced the legislation as a way to help municipalities fill dwindling coffers. His office told the Journal that Grand Rapids officials believe if the legislation is made into law, it could result in the city garnering $1 million in unpaid parking ticket fees. Under current law, persons with six or more unpaid parking tickets can be prevented from renewing their license.
