McCotter targeted in television add by union

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.19.09 | 2:32 pm

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in conjunction with Health Care for America Now (HCAN) has launched an attacking Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Livonia, for not supporting health care reform.

The groups are targeting McCotter, as well as Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, along with legislators from other states including Senator Richard Burr (R-NC); Representatives Mark Kirk (IL-10); Patrick Tiberi (OH-12); Dave Reichert (WA-08); and John Boehner (OH-08). A national version of the ads, which is titled “Shoes,” is also airing, targeting Republican leaders John Boehner, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor, Senate Minority Leader Mitchell McConnell, and Senate Republican Whip John Kyl.

McCotter is the head of the Republican Policy Committee.

McCotter has also been heavily involved in promoting the idea that health care reform will lead to so-called “death panels.” His rhetoric lead Rep. Mark Schauer, a Democratic freshman from Battle Creek, to call on McCotter and others to “read the bill,” and accused the Livonia Republican of using fear to taint the discussion on health care reform.

From a press release by AFSCME and HCAN, AFSCME Internation President Gerald McEntee had this to say about the new ads:

“These Republicans on Capitol Hill are working for the insurance industry, not the American people. They are putting profits ahead of people, and the voters need to know it. Congress has to make real reform happen – Americans can’t wait for reform that guarantees quality, affordable health care for all.”

The McCotter ad alleges he took $333,000 from the health care industry. The ad can be viewed here. The ad buy will cost the groups $650,000.
