Detroit School Board sues financial manager Bobb

By Minehaha Forman | 08.17.09 | 2:44 pm

It’s official. The Detroit Public Schools Board of Education, after two months of threats, filed a lawsuit against districts Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb for making a decision on academics without prior consultation with the Board.

The Board filed the lawsuit against Bobb in the Wayne County Circuit Court Monday morning, the Detroit News reports.

School Board members said they found out about Bobb’s decision to hire the academic consulting firms through media reports. According to Board members Bobb, who Gov. Jennifer Granholm appointed to lead district finances in February, has no control over academics and therefore broke state law when he made the decision to hire academic consultants.

Bobb has said he is confident that he did not violate any laws and that part of his job as fiscal executive of the district is to shape up academics as well.

As a result of the lawsuit, the Board wants a judge to block Bobb from making academic decisions and force him to consult with its members before making any fiscal changes.
