Bobb nixes Detroit School Board decision

The tension between Detroit Public School’s Board of Education and state appointed emergency financial manager Robert Bobb escalated again last week when the board promoted the acting superintendent to the permanent post without consulting Bobb.

According to a Detroit News report, the board voted 8-1 on Thursday to promote Teresa Gueyser, the acting superintendent who stepped in when the Board fired superintendent Connie Calloway in December, to take the job permanently.

The board made the decision without putting out a national search to fill the position, something Bobb believes should be the first step of the hiring process.

Bobb used his power as emergency financial manager to cut Gueyser’s pay if she continues to hold the position the board voted her to.

In July the school board moved to seek an injunction to sue Bobb for what they considered an overstep of authority when he hired academic consultants without informing the board prior to the decision.

Gueyser has worked with DPS for years as a legal counsel. Her face is familiar to those who attend school board meetings.
