After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Jackson County Commissioner Phil Duckham is under fire for carrying a sign with a swastika on it during a health care reform protest outside the Jackson district office of U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer on Thursday.

Duckham’s photo appeared in the Jackson Citizen-Patriot along with comments comparing Hitler’s rise to power with President Obama’s tenure in office.

(Michigan Messenger snapped its own photo of Duckham at the rally, at right)

According to the Citizen-Patriot, Duckham said:

This is how Hitler started out. First, Obama took over the auto industry, then the banking industry. We don’t need him to take over the health-care industry.

Jackson area residents have been sounding off on Duckham’s appearance and sign in the comments section of the Citizen-Patriot’s article.

Wrote poster KThoughts:

Mr. Duckham’s sign was truly offensive. It’s the height of insensitivity to those whose ancestors were victims of Nazi terror. Is there anyone on the County Board of Commissioners with the courage to seek his censure? Shame on you, Mr. Duckham!

And commenter Daffairc had this to say:

Regardless – Whatever the position of the County Commish who showed up with a sign – NEVER is it acceptable to brandish a swastica [sic]. EVER. EVER. No matter what your thoughts are on this measure that was completely inappropriate. I will do my level best to see he is not reelected and will attend the next commission meeting to voice my concern about his judgement [sic]. I urge others to do the same.

And Pluto88 wrote:

I’m glad that Phil Duckham showed who he is to the greater public.

We could be shocked to know what this man’s real politics and opinions are about a lot of things.

Someone that crass and ignorant as to use the swastika in a debate on health care has deeper issues. These scare tactics disgust me.

But poster Empyrean says the Citizen-Patriot got it wrong.

Hahahahaaaaaaa!!! What absolutely shoddy, inaccurate, and blatantly biased reporting by the Pat. Error in fact; error in fact; error in fact.

Clearly, as seen in the picture shown above that the Pat published, Duckham’s sign WAS ANTI-NAZI — it’s got the international NO symbol, a circle with a bisecting line through it, drawn over that NAZI swastika. That sign denotes that the carrier is anti-Nazi-ism, not that he’s for it, you ink stained morons.

Can all you Pat reporters actually be so thick in the head — and culturally and historically ignorant — that you don’t really understand what you’re actually seeing when you go out to report on a political event … oh, never mind, I’m pretty sure that I already know the answer to that question. A pox on all of your houses. Bah!

And Greg Wilson defended the county commissioner as well:

Phil Duckham is a TRUE patriot of America. His display of the swastika with the international “NO” drawn over it proves that he will be the first one to protect your rights as an American. Those who criticize his right to express himself are the same people who would (or have) burn(ed) our United States of America flag. How pathetic.

There are a lot of parallels between Obama, the Democrats and Hitler. Current history is reflecting past history…. don’t get sucked in one little “change” at a time.

I find this article appalling. First off Hitlar was trying to kill all the Jews and I don't see Obama trying to do that. Second obama did not take over the auto industry or the banking industry so get your facts straight. Of course I am not in 100% of what some issues are with obama but this system we have right now for health care are not working and if it is working for you than tell me why than 65% of america don't have health care? This health care proposal is something we should be seeing with happiness and to wait out and see how it works. We shouldn't be crying about it like babies and saying “This is how i want it, my way my way, Obama's a communist cause that is basically what you are saying when you call him another hitler. Another thing is that, yes this is a free country and we can say almost anything about the government however calling Obama hitler when you have ancesters on both sides of the political party to me shows not being american. This shows me that you aren't getting your way and because your not getting your own way your going to cry about it and turn it into something it isn't. Stop turning this thing around and start looking at the bright side of these. Yes maybe this mecial bill isn't perfect but the crap that we have now for health care is failing and people in the health care busniess is getting richer and richer so please stop being a baby and LISTEN!! The last thing is for Phil Duckham, putting the nazi symbol to try to represent america is wrong and there is no need for that in america. That was racist and un ethical. I will be voting against you in the next election for this shows your true colors. And to anyone who is reading this article and agreeing with Phil Duckham. START THINKING FOR YOURSELF!! instead of saying oh he is a republican i need to act republican or he is a democrate i have to act like a regular democrate. Don't give me that. We all have minds this to me is just being lazy. So start thinking for yourself and get all your facts straight before you start fighting for something that you probably never even know anything about!! Oh and by the way I am a college student so please give me grief i would love to hear from some of you old people on how this is socializm.

The swastika is a patently racist symbol – hate speech so inflammatory that it is often banned outright – as offensive to Jews and people of good conscience as a noose is to African Americans. It is our “N-word.”

Hitler is a poor choice for totalitarian fearmongering. Stalin, Kim Jong Il, JB Aristide – those are your A-list dictators. Hitler, however, symbolizes something much more sinister: Hitler is the symbol of choice for Genocide.

Why are racism and Genocide entering the debate over health care reform? Why is an elected official brandishing such a powerful symbol? Is this just another case of runaway republican rabble-rousing, like the October McPalin rallies?

Duckham has free speech. He is free to use hate speech. He may certainly choose to invoke racist symbolism and Genocidal rhetoric, either as a citizen or a public servant. But as a public servant, Duckham is accountable to his constituents.

How does Jackson County feel about Duckham's hate speech? Bad enough to unseat him in the next election? Bad enough to censure him now?

Ii have not lived in Jackson county for many years but I still feel ashamed, along with the decent people who remain there, that this sort of person could be elected to office..It is true that we do have freedom of speech but we all know that there are limits to what should be said in public, particularly by elected officials. This man is obviously a fool.I suggest a recall is in order..

Phil Duckham needs to be sent packing! Lets get him out of office. He should be kicked to the curb just like the rest of the idiots trying to bring this country to its knees! He is not an American in my book!

Might this be taking free speech a little to far?

  • jbrent

I am offended by any idiot that can not see the commissioner's point, and refuse to face the facts that history and current events show us. This is not taking free speech too far, it is not taking it far enough. The American public has become so ignorant, so uneducated, and so foolish that they can not see that history is repeating itself, just as it has in the past. Jackson County, indeed all of America, needs more people like Commissioner Duckham, who have the brains and intuition to see what is happening, the guts to speak out about it, and patriotism to carry on in spite of ignorant fools who have no idea what is really happening in this country.
