Bing looks to cut weekend bus service in Detroit

By Minehaha Forman | 08.13.09 | 12:56 pm

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that Mayor Dave Bing wants to cut all Sunday bus service and shave hours from Saturday bus schedules in Detroit:

[The Bing] administration is proposing eliminating Sunday bus service and stopping service at 6 p.m. on Saturdays as part of plan to cut services in a city that’s trying to dig out of a $350-million deficit.

The Bing administration plans to schedule public hearings for open discussions of the transit cuts.

In a city where busses are the only significant form of public transit, this proposal may get heat at public hearings. The Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) estimates that every week 1.7 million people utilize the DDOT bus system.
