Sen. Carl Levin addressed widely expressed fears from Republicans that moving the detainees from Guantanamo Bay to a maximum security prison in Michigan would be risky and dangerous, saying that allowing such fears to determine our actions amounts to giving in to terrorism. Politico reports:
Opponents of moving inmates at Guantanamo to prisons in the U.S. are essentially giving in to terrorists, Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) said Sunday.
“We should not be cowed by the terrorists so we don’t even keep them in maximum security prisons in the U.S.,” Levin told CBS’s “Face the Nation” Sunday. “We cannot allow the terrorists to be intimidating us from trying them and keeping them in our jails.”
Levin said he backs in principle a plan to bring some of the inmates to a prison slated to close soon in his home state.
“I support that provided we have local support and the governor when we’re talking about state facilities. Of course, I do,” he said.
The local support seems to be there, but Granholm has been hedging her bets on the issue.
