AFL-CIO encourages members to attend health care events, counter protesters

In the wake of a contentious meeting between Democratic U.S. Rep. John Dingell of Dearborn, and constituents about health care reform, the AFL-CIO union has entered the fray.

According to a story on MLive.com, Frank Gaffney, head of the AFL-CIO in Michigan, told WJR’s Frank Beckman the union wants to be there to support health care reform. He said he was personally “turned off” by counter protesters.

“What we’ve got going on here is a lot of misinformation,” he said. “We’ve got people being geeked up, being encouraged to raise hell when what they really ought to be doing is asking about the parts of the bill.”

“…The people who show up themselves are not paid, but the organizers who get them to turn out certainly are.”

He said the protesters were showing up with talking points from the insurance industry, according to the MLive.com story. This news comes as Democratic U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer of Battle Creek is planning a town hall meeting in Jackson Thursday.
