Marquette County ponders what to do now that it has been denied federal grants for cops

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.10.09 | 10:20 am

Seven Upper Peninsula law enforcement agencies are pondering what to do now that they know they did not get federal grants to hire new police officers.

According to the Marquette Mining Journal, six western Marquette County townships and the county sheriff’s department applied for federal funding for three officers for three years. The governments would then, under the grant rules, pay for an additional year of employment.

“We didn’t even get an officer, so it’s disappointing, especially since we’re down 10 officers since 2004,” [Marquette County Undersheriff Jack Schneider] said.

Instead, the Justice Department handed out $34 million in grants, funding 160 law enforcement posts across the state.
