Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop is defending protesters at health care town halls, and implying they could come back against state leaders.
On WJR Radio this morning, the Republican from Rochester told Frank Beckmann that the protests were what the founding fathers imagined when they wrote the Declaration of Independence. As quoted by MLive.com:
“The kind of reaction that you’re getting from the public out there was envisioned by our forefathers. And it’s our responsibility to let the public know and to let our elected officials know how we feel about things.”
And Bishop said Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who has floated proposals to increase the state’s beer and tobacco taxes as well as changing state law so soda pop can be taxed, should take heed of the protests happening around the state.
“If she’s going to rely on a proposal that includes tax increases she needs to let the public know that so that we can speak out, and if we turn into an ‘angry mob,’ so be it.”
The protests like the one Congressman John Dingell faced Thursday night have been criticized by Democrats as created by welathy interests connected to the Republican party. In fact, the Democratic National Committee released this video alleging “desperate Republicans and their well founded allies are now organizing angry mobs, just like they did during the election.”
Rachel Maddow also took the issue on in her show on Aug. 5.
