Bishop: ‘Angry mobs’ could return if Granholm sin tax increases pass

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.07.09 | 4:26 pm

Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop is defending protesters at health care town halls, and implying they could come back against state leaders.

On WJR Radio this morning, the Republican from Rochester told Frank Beckmann that the protests were what the founding fathers imagined when they wrote the Declaration of Independence. As quoted by MLive.com:

“The kind of reaction that you’re getting from the public out there was envisioned by our forefathers. And it’s our responsibility to let the public know and to let our elected officials know how we feel about things.”

And Bishop said Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who has floated proposals to increase the state’s beer and tobacco taxes as well as changing state law so soda pop can be taxed, should take heed of the protests happening around the state.

“If she’s going to rely on a proposal that includes tax increases she needs to let the public know that so that we can speak out, and if we turn into an ‘angry mob,’ so be it.”

The protests like the one Congressman John Dingell faced Thursday night have been criticized by Democrats as created by welathy interests connected to the Republican party. In fact, the Democratic National Committee released this video alleging “desperate Republicans and their well founded allies are now organizing angry mobs, just like they did during the election.”

Rachel Maddow also took the issue on in her show on Aug. 5.

Mike Bishop is just one example of the growing noise from the Shout'n'Threat Gang. These people and their “angry mob” behavior are a disgrace to the memory of those who fought and died for this country. Listen up, guys: people have a right to peaceful protest. They don't have a right to be obnoxious morons whose behavior prevents other citizens from talking with their elected representatives.

Perhaps in his youth Sen. Bishop was too busy fixing his hair and taking younger kids' lunch money to attend any of his American history and civics classes…

Until recently, groups that felt it was their responsibility to let the public know and to let their elected officials know how they felt about things were confined to 'free speech zones' enclosed by chain link fencing, at a distance from the host venue or jailed until the event had ended.

I am proud that my country is returning to the ideals of our founding fathers, as noted by the Honorable Senator Mike Bishop. The Honorable Senator Bishop may come to acknowledge the founding fathers held these truths as self evident because they ensured an informed citizenry; this organized disruption of town hall meetings is in direct opposition to these ideals. Town hall meetings have a long history of sharing information and political give-and-take. Indeed, the organized disruption of local meetings has a long and proud history in various authoritarian regimes.

Does anyone else find irony in using these tactics while accusing President Obama of being fascist?
