Detroit made $349,000 secret pay out to silence cop critic

By Todd A. Heywood | 08.07.09 | 10:00 am

The city of Detroit paid out $349,000 to silence a man who accused two Detroit Police Officers of beating him and conducting an illegal body cavity search.

The Detroit Free Press is reporting that the Detroit Law Department made the pay out to Byron Ogletree, 43, of River Rouge in March of 2007. He alleges the incident occurred on May 31, 2006. Ogletree was charged in drug related offenses from the incident, but those charges were dismissed by a judge because the video from the police car dash cam had not been kept.

The city authorizes the Law Department to make payouts on complaints not issued as lawsuits, as was the case with Ogletree.

The two officers accused in the incident, Michael Parish and Michael Osman, have been accused by at least 11 other men of unlawful body searches. They have sued, and received settlements of up to $25,000.
