By Staff Report | 11.16.11

I am writing today to announce the closure of the Michigan Messenger. After four years of operation in Michigan, the board of the American Independent News Network, has decided to shift publication of its news into a single site, The American Independent at Americanindependent.com. This is part of a shift in strategy, towards new forms [...]

Dingell to host health care town hall; teabaggers organize heckle campaign

By Eartha Jane Melzer | 08.06.09 | 4:26 pm

Police are prepared for disruptions at a town hall meeting on health care to be hosted by Democratic U.S. Rep. John Dingell in Romulus tonight, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Protesters have disrupted meetings held by other Representatives around the country and Think Progress reports that lobbyist-run groups are organizing an aggressive campaign aimed at creating the impression of mass opposition to health care and clean energy reform.

A memo titled “Rocking the Town Halls — Best Practices” is circulating on tea party listservs and provides directions for activists on how to disrupt the town hall meetings.

From Think Progress:

The memo above also resembles the talking points being distributed by FreedomWorks for pushing an anti-health reform assault all summer. Patients United, a front group maintained by Americans for Prosperity, is currently busing people all over the country for more protests against Democratic members. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the NRCC, has endorsed the strategy, telling the Politico the days of civil town halls are now “over.”

Meanwhile, AHIP, the trade group and lobbying juggernaut representing the health insurance industry is sending staffers to monitor town halls and other right-wing front groups are stepping up their ad campaign to smear reform efforts. The strategy for defeating reform — recently outlined by an influential lobbyist to the Hill newspaper as “delay” then “kill” — is becoming apparent. By delaying a vote until after the August recess, lobbyists are now seizing upon recess town halls as opportunities to ambush lawmakers and fool them into believing there is wide opposition

Right Michigan has this account of how the TEA Party of West Michigan organized to crash a Kent County Democratic Party Picnic where Democratic Senator Carl Levin was speaking Aug. 1.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone other than the executives and shareholders of the private insurance companies could think that our current healthcare system is meeting the needs of the American people. I'm a medical professional myself and support universal health care reform. I've written my Congressman, Senators, and the President on more than one occasion and have also called their offices to voice my support for reform. I've also spent countless hours researching what the best overall way is to bring down long term costs in order to provide everybody accessible and affordable health care. Here's my solutions – http://bit.ly/9QLV8.

Pathetic article on so many levels. Your title reference to “teabaggers” I think speaks volumes about your journalistic “integrity” and maturity level.

Grow a pair. You leftists sure can dish it out, but boy, you can't take it. Now can you?

This is my first time checking out this site. I saw “A Center for Independent Media” on the masthead. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that this is not independent at all. It's a propaganda paper for the left. Wow! Lobbyist-run groups? These people are all independent thinkers, who don't need anyone's talking points to tell them what to think. It's called common sense, people. Wake up and smell the coffee. People are really fired up about this, and telling us we really aren't is a way to get the Democrats out of office big time!

They have their reasons to campaign, in this issue we particularly show their disagreement of that health care reform.
