Southfield councilman pleads guilty to bribery charges

By Minehaha Forman | 08.06.09 | 1:59 pm

DETROIT — Southfield City Councilman William Lattimore pleaded guilty to bribery charges in federal court on Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Lattimore, who pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in July, changed his plea to accept a plea bargain that would reduce his sentencing.

Lattimore on Thursday admitted to accepting $7,500 in bribes from political consultant Sam Riddle and former State Rep. Mary Waters. According to the indictment, Riddle and his girlfriend Waters funneled $7,500 to Lattimore on behalf of a Detroit jewelry store owner who wanted to move the store to Southfield and needed council support.

Part of Lattimore’s plea deal mandates that he cooperate in the investigation of Riddle and Waters and ensures that the councilman will not get more than 30 months in jail.

Because the Southfield city charter bans all convicted felons from office, Lattimore’s service on city council ended as soon as he entered his guilty plea. He is expected to formally announce his resignation this week.
