Nofs, Griffin to face off in special election to fill Schauer’s vacated state senate seat

Republican Mike Nofs and Democrat Marty Griffin will face each other on the Nov. 3 ballot to fill the state senate seat vacated by Mark Schauer earlier this year. Democrat Schauer beat out Republican Tim Walberg to become the new congressman from the 7th District.

Griffin, a state representative and former mayor of Jackson, bested Sharon Renier of Munith. Renier has run multiple times for various positions, including for the nod as Democratic candidate for the 7th District. But she said this defeat was too much.

From the Battle Creek Enquirer:

“I’m officially a Republican,” she said, adding that she will “absolutely” take on Tim Walberg in the Republican primary for U.S. House District 7 in 2010.

“I am no longer a Democrat,” Renier said. “They don’t even know when they’ve got a good candidate.”

Meanwhile, on the Republican side, Nofs, a former law maker and state police commander, swept the primary against Parma resident Jim Wellman, who is also a trustee on a township board in Jackson county. Nofs finished out the primary with 87 percent of the vote.
