Council candidates Pugh, Cockrel lead Detroit polls

Days before Detroit’s general election primary, some candidates are pulling ahead in the polls.

Former journalist Charles Pugh leads the pack of 167 candidates with 65 percent voter support, according to a poll conducted by political consultant Mark Grebner. Coming in at a close second is current City Council President Kenneth Cockrel Jr.

At the bottom of the poll, about two percentage points above disgraced councilwoman Monica Conyers, was incumbent Martha Reeves with 15.6 percent.

That’s not enough to get her elected, according to Grebner. “It’s really clear that Martha Reeves does not have a shot at being re-elected,” Grebner told the Detroit News.

The Grebner poll surveyed 200 likely Detroit voters during the first week in July.
