$21,300 in city gear missing from Monica Conyers’ office

If federal bribery charges and a felony conviction weren’t enough trouble for former city councilwoman Monica Conyers, then she doesn’t have to worry.

According to city officials, Monica Conyers made off with $21,300 in city owned office equipment before her June 6 resignation. If the equipment is not returned, the Detroit police will be knocking on her door with some questions.

City Council president Kenneth Cockrel Jr. sent a memo to council members this morning alerting them that $21,300 in equipment was missing from Conyers’ office after an inventory reported missing goods, the Detroit News reports.

The inventory listed 29 city-owned electric devices as missing, including laptop and desktop computers, digital cameras, printers and software, according to Cockrel’s memo obtained by the Detroit News.

The memo states that two of the missing laptop computers were delivered to Conyers’ office two weeks before she resigned.

Conyers’ attorney, Steve Fishman, told the Detroit Free Press that Conyers did not take any city owned gear.

But Cockrel thinks the culprit is Conyers. He wrote a letter to the former councilwoman on July 23 asking her to return the items before he notified the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s office of theft.

Cockrel wrote to Conyers last week in the letter:

“As you know, these items were purchased with City tax dollars and are City of Detroit property. Please contact me by close of business Monday July 27 2009 to arrange the return of the items listed … or to provide a definitive explanation of their whereabouts. If I do no hear from you the items will be deemed stolen property and I will forward this information to the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County prosecutor’s office.”

Cockrel said he was not able to deliver the letter directly to Conyers and has not heard a response from her.
