DETROIT — The Southeast Michigan and statewide chapter of the Sierra Club Thursday announced its endorsement of 13 Detroit City Council candidates in the August 4th primary election.
The Sierra Club, the nation’s largest grassroots environmental organization, praised its 13 selections for their “outstanding” commitment to environmental issues in a press release.
The Southeast Michigan group of the Sierra Club focuses on identifying and fighting to eliminate residential health threats in Detroit such as lead paint, diesel truck emissions and fighting to close controversial trash incinerator that its members attribute to a higher number respiratory illnesses in the city. The group also promotes urban farming and recycling.
“We are confident that the following candidates are qualified and committed to these many issues to protect and improve Detroit’s environment and quality of life,” said Carol Izant, Southeast Michigan Political Chair.
Of the 13 endorsements, only one incumbent, JoAnn Watson, was chosen. No candidates for mayor were mentioned in the press release.

JoAnn Watson: environmental champion on all issues and a leader on the City Council
Alvin Sims: strong on recycling and would make Detroit an eco- city
Anema Bomani: anti incineration/pro recycling, ordinance to rezone for agriculture
Beverly Kindle-Walker: strong on all issues, works for Wayne County Commissioner
Darlita Jones: well versed in zero waste/discharge, organized an Environmental Justice conference
Fred Hall: anti incinerator, pro transit, green spaces, water quality
Hilanius Phillips: head planner for the city, anti incineration/pro recycling, favors green practices
John Harris: strong on Environmental Justice issues, and a community activist.
Margie McCall: water quality, regional cooperation, wind turbines for Detroit
Renette Jackson: anti incineration, pro transit, regional cooperation
Roy McCalister: pro recycling, public transit, urban farms, green practices
Saunteel Jenkins: strong on all issues, former top aide to deceased council president Mahaffey
Sharon Bell: anti incinerator/pro recycling, concerned about industrial pollution
